The New Asus Nexus 7

Recently I’ve bought the latest version of the Nexus 7 tablet by Asus. It’s been released in summer and it’s been a few months since it’s out on the market. From the outside it looks similar to the old Nexus 7 except for a few quirks. It’s got slightly bulkier edges and the dock pin connection is gone. Other than that it looks pretty much the same.

The computer itself is more powerful with a quad core processor and 2GB of memory. I’ve got the version with 32GB storage. It’s a very fast system and works snappy. Comparing it to other tablets on the market it’s one of the fastest, seeing most tablets still run on 2 core processors and 1GB memory.

Smartphones Outnumber “Dumb” Phones for the First Time Ever

The sales numbers of the first quarter of 2013 show that of all mobile phones shipped out by manufacturers, 51.6% were smartphones. For the first time in history more smartphones were shipped than feature phones, reports IDC.

This shows an obvious trend in mobile phone usage. People no longer want a phone just to call and send text messages, they want a computer in their pocket.

The report also shows that Samsung is the leader among all (smart and feature) mobile phone manufacturers having a 27.5% market share, which is more then the next four competitors combined (Nokia with 14.8% and Apples with 8.9%, followed by LG and ZTE).

It’s important to note, though, that Nokia holds this market share primarily in the “dumb” phone market, as their smartphone market share is below 4%. So while they have lost the smartphone battle, they’re very well competing in the feature phone market mainly by focusing on emerging markets in developing countries.

Bad News for Android (Malware)

A new malware was discovered by a security firm Lookout which has already infected millions of user phones via compromosed apps.

The malware called BadNews has spread through apps by pretending to be an ad platform to unsuspecting developers. As much as 32 apps from 4 developers have been affected and have since been removed from the Play store. It targets mostly Russian users.

BadNews is bad news because it fakes alerts in user’s phone and entice them to download more infected apps, subscribes them to premium sms services and sends the IMEI code to the malware creators.

The list of affected apps is available so you can check your installed apps against it to make sure your phone is not infected.

Will Microsoft Compete with Google Glass in 2014?

While the bars and restaurants begin banning Google Glass before it’s even released, rumor has it Microsoft is going to compete with a similar project in next year. Named “Fortaleza” Microsoft’s augmented reality eye wear device has been revealed even earlier than Glass was announced.

If the rumor is true we are going to see a competitor for Google’s device which is a logical step for Microsoft as Samsung and Apple are also getting into the wearable computing. Samsung is about to release a smartwatch and Apple has the iWatch project. So obviously Microsoft wants to be relevant in this space too and offer something to the market. Granted it’s just a rumor, seeing as other companies already have similar devices in development, it’s natural to expect Microsoft to do so as well.

Facebook to Announce a New Smartphone?

To be exact Facebook is to hold an event on April 4th where they will reveal their “New Home On Android”. Rumor has it, it will be a modified Android OS version on an HTC phone.

This poses an interesting question. If it’s a Facebook phone we’re going to get, what kind of phone and who will use it?

Facebook is already available on Android devices as an app, however an integration like this where the phone itself would be focused on content from Facebook not only would make it more accessible but also be a big opportunity to collect a lot of data from the users.

Facebook certainly has motivation to release such a device, the question is if anyone needs it. We will see.

Google Translate for Android Adds Offline Support

Google Translate app is a handy little tool when you’re traveling but in order for it to work you need an internet connection. But connection is something that can often be unavailable when you’re traveling, which makes the app unavailable right when you need it.

Not anymore. The app now has an option to download a database to your phone and can be used offline. Although this version is not as comprehensive as the online version, it will certainly do well with at least the basic phrases.

The new version is available for Android 2.3.

Unlocking a Phone Becomes Illegal in US

Starting Jan 26, 2013 unlocking your phone becomes illegal according to the Librarian of Congress who determines exemptions to the DCMA law, unless you ask the permission of your carrier first. This is a pretty big deal.

Up until now you could unlock your phone to be used with a carrier other than that you’ve purchased from with a phone service contract. By looking up a special code or downloading a tool online you could easily unlock your phone without having to buy an unlocked one for full price. Carriers do this to restrict the use of the phone to their service in exchange of a low price and a service contact.

Some carriers like T-Mobile will have their marketing plan affected as they were promoting their service by giving discounts to people who bring their phone from other carriers.

On a side note, unlocking is not to be confused with jail-breaking a phone which is enabling it to run different software than that restricted by the manufacturer.
