How to Lock Your Computer?

In Windows, it is a simple matter to learn how to lock (password protect) your computer. A password protected computer cannot be accessed without the password being entered. Having a password will prevent unauthorized viewing of your computer files, computer history, and other personal information. You might also want to create multiple user accounts on one computer, each of them being password protected. For our purposes, we are going to assume that you are running the latest version of Microsoft Windows, which is Windows 7. These instructions will also work for those who are running Windows Vista.

  • Click on Start.
  • Click on Control Panel. Although there are a few ways to view the items in the control panel, we will assume you are viewing them by category. To confirm that this is so, locate the View by drop-down menu. You can find it in the upper right hand corner of the window. If it is not already selected, select Category.
  • Click on Add or Remove User Accounts. You will find this option under the category User Accounts and Family Safety. A window will appear titled Choose the account you would like to change.
  • Click on Create a New Account. If there are already accounts established on your computer, this option will be beneath the list of current accounts.
  • Find a box labeled with the words New Account Name. Type the name that you wish to assign to the new account.
  • – Click the radio button to indicate whether the account holder will have standard or administrative permission on the computer. Keep in mind that the administrator can make changes to the computer.
  • – Click on Create Account. This will create the account. The account will be displayed in the user list.
  • – Click on the account icon and then click on Create a Password.
  • – Choose a password for the account. You can also choose to add a hint that will remind the user of the password if they should forget.
The password protected account is now ready to use. If you are not creating an account and want to password protect the computer for just the administrator (you), then just follow this pathway:
Control Panel ? User Accounts ? Create a Password for Your Account ? and then follow the prompts.
